This an infection caused by a Leptospira bacterium. Dogs become infected when they are exposed to the bacteria in the urine of infected animals. The infected animals are often wildlife. Raccoons and skunks are a common source of infection for our dogs.
Treatment in hospital with antibiotics will be needed if your dog is diagnosed with leptospirosis. Preventing the disease by vaccinating dogs that are at risk of being exposed to the disease is important. Your veterinarian will help you decide if your dog is at risk.
